Charity according to Ban Ki-moon (UN Secretary-General) is one of the best investments we can make in our common future. On the day of International Charity, he called on people everywhere to be part of this partnership for humanity and to help make the Sustainable Development Goals a reality for all.

The United Nations marks every 12th of August as International Youths Day.  A day set aside to create awareness on the challenges and achievements of our youths. The focus on this years event was on how to involve our youths in eradicating poverty within our society.

Over the years, I have seen people at the rural communities believe in different kind of things that beat my imagination. Some of them believe that certain medical care such as drugs and blood transfusion are meant for the nonbelievers. I have also seen people worship God through diverse mediums like snake, tree, sun and moon, chaplet, mirror, river and others.

The world remembers and celebrates widows every June 23rd.  At Splendour Vintage Heights Foundation, our activities started on 22nd June 2016 as we went on Radio Nigeria:Treasure 98.5FM Port Harcourt, and discussed on the plights of widows in Nigeria.

The hunger for a plate of food can make a virgin become a prostitute over-night, a principled person become a thief and even a man of ideas to become a fool.  The  need for food has driven most people at the rural areas to the point where they have lost faith in themselves.  Parents struggle daily to provide for their children without success as they try to find the push to go on living with the resultant effect of producing more children because hunger and ignorant are like twins.

Eleh was already a mother of three before she became 20 years. One of the few (disadvantaged) ladies that survive by being a loyalist to a notorious drug kingpin. When I asked Eleh what led her to such life style, she told me a story that left me stunned. She was given to marriage as a girl child at thirteen years to an old man who was her father's friend.

Nigeria has a lot of cultural and traditional beliefs and taboos. Some are practiced while others are not because of civilization. •For example in the Ibibio tribe using the left hand actively is a form of insult  such as using the left hand to give or accept something,  doing house chores and even using the left hand to eat.

Madam Felicia lost her husband since 1988, she also lost all her nine (9) children.  Today, she is a member of our project (widows-without-children). I met someone special and specialty is not enough to describe her. She is an orphan of17 years, was abandoned at a healing home (a church that accommodates people possessed of evil spirits and keeps them until they feel that the devil is finally cast out through prayers). When I interacted with her, she admitted that she was always falling and fainting until her relatives finally abandoned her in the healing home. She confided in me that a kind nurse who observed her secretly started treating her of epilepsy and now she's better. The big problem is where would she live as home and how can she learn a trade or skill because the sickness lasted for about six years. When I discussed with members of her immediate environment, they were still sure that the evil spirit has only left her for a small time and will still come back.   She said she would want to be a professional fashion designer. My heart still cries for her. Wondering why life is like this for some people yet others have

A TRIP TO OUR WIDOWS

We shall be visiting our #widowswithoutchildren on Wednesday 3rd February 2016. This time we shall be getting their stories on how life has been with them especially as it concerns their efforts, struggles and challenges that comes from being a widow in our rural community.
