IS THERE A SOLUTION: ILLITERACY IN THE RURAL AREAS

Image
In defining illiteracy, it is important to understand what literacy is all about.   Literacy is the ability to identify, understand, interpret, create, communicate and compute using printed and written materials associated with varying contexts. Literacy involves a continuum of learning in enabling individuals to achieve their goals, to develop their knowledge and potential, and to participate fully in their community and wider society according to OECD’s  Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies . Illiteracy on the other side means the state of being illiterate – lack of any or enough education. dictionary.reference.com/browse/ illiteracy.  The causes of illiteracy are something that one cannot link to destiny because certain circumstances and situations can actually cause one into becoming an illiterate.  They include Poverty: when you live below poverty line, the basic needs of life (food, shelter and security) become a struggle to get.  I

THE PLIGHT OF WIDOWS IN THE RURAL AREAS

Image
Becoming a widow is every woman's nightmare and for the rural dwellers widowhood means going through a lot of hardship that comes from tradition and the late husbands' family.  In most rural areas in African a widow is treated as an outcast, it is always believed that she knows something about her husband's death either through adultery or witchcraft. As a result, widows are always humiliated; they are not allowed to have a bath or wash their hands after eating.  Sometimes, a widow is not allowed to change her clothes or underwear, she has to sit and sleep on the bare floor during her period of confinement -  eprints.covenantuniversity.edu.ng/id/file/6716 Since most women in the rural areas are illiterate and lack any form of skill acquisition, their transition of becoming a widow is always associated with pain, grief and depression since they have almost nothing to fall back on -   http://leadership.ng/features/342278/the-plight-of-widows-and-struggle-for-surviva

RURAL LINKAGES: A PRIORITY FOR INTERNATIONAL AGENCIES

Image
The Merriam-Webster dictionary defined linkages as a connection or relationship between two or more things. http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/linkage ' Rural' on its own can be defined as the local, primitive, remote, uncivilised etc' http://www.iied.org/rural-urban-linkages .  Sometimes the term rural is often seen from a derogatory point hence the constant  need for change, transformation or development as it relates to rural issues. Rural linkages therefore can be seen as the connection of information, policies or agreements on issues that cuts across the rural people.  In other words, it is the ability to organize the local communities in their demo-graphs, profession, association and other activities in order to motivate and distribute packages that can enhance a better standard of living for them. Most international agencies have always packaged projects/programmes for the rural people.  These projects usually receive the political blessings of the pow

CHRISTAIN (OUR ORPHAN) LEARNS A TRADE

Image
This is Christain and his boss.  History was made on the 6th of June 2015 as the team of Splendour Vintage Heights Foundation (also known as The Rural People) did the official signing of the agreement between them and the management of this welding company on the behalf of  Christain Deezua (an orphan from Sii community in Bara, Gwara) in Bori, Rivers State. Beside the signing and paying the fee for the agreement, the rural people also provided Christain with Safety Helmet, hand gloves, safety glasses and canvass shoe.  That particular date was intentionally chosen as it coincided with the birthday date of our live-matron Mrs. Emah Ekpo. One of our partners Fr. Peter Isidore prayed for Christain and his boss before handing over the money for his training. On behalf of our donors, partners and everyone at the rural people, we wish Christain success in this career and we also call for more people to get involved in what we are doing at the rural people so that you can help another

COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTERS

Image
The need for a community health center in every rural community cannot be over-emphasized.  These health centers should be accessible and affordable by an average rural dweller. Its services  should be such that the rural dweller can get timely, without waiting for consultants or certain equipment to be brought before being attended to.  The effectiveness of a health care delivery system should be central in meeting the goal of such health care else the essence of it will be highly defeated. http://www.who.int/pmnch/countries/nigeria-plan-chapter-3.pdf.  Here in Splendour Vintage Heights Foundation (also known as The Rural People), we take the health of the rural people very important hence we involve health packages in every developmental project that we engage in.

WHERE IS THE LOVE

Image
As the world celebrates 'global day of parents' on the1st of June every year, I cant help but wonder what the same world thinks about those who are living and growing without having the experience of what a mother/father relationship is.  These are people who are constantly reminded by caregivers that they are not their parents and should therefore be grateful for whatever attempt they make in providing food, shelter, clothing and security which forms the basic needs of every human being. The task of caring for someone else in ones real poor state is a huge one and huge(er) is even the task of trully caring in the real sense of the word 'care'.  Then, the real issue is what could be the experience of a child who lives with people that present themselves as "foster parents" but are not parents in any sense of it.  i just hope these children will grow up and become parents than the people they see and live with today. The role of a foster parent according
