SPIRITUALITY AND DEVELOPMENT

Over the years, I have seen people at the rural communities believe in different kind of things that beat my imagination. Some of them believe that certain medical care such as drugs and blood transfusion are meant for the nonbelievers. I have also seen people worship God through diverse mediums like snake, tree, sun and moon, chaplet, mirror, river and others.

Spirituality here is defined as that search for the meaning of our existence with a connection to something that is bigger than us. Ofcourse it means different things to different people. It defines our believe system, lifestyle, way of life (culture), perceptions etc.

The issue here is how do we use our spirituality to enhance our individual and community development. How can we get to the point where our spirituality stops becoming a weapon of disunity, attack and blackmail for nonbelievers of our spiritual belief.

Development on itself is progressive, expanding, changing for better amongst others. The world can never come to an agreement on spiritual matters ironically they do for sustainable development. Today, just as some persons reject medical care for spiritual reasons others refuse to partake in certain activities that can enhance community development for same spiritual reasons such as being a part of cooperative, taking loans, involvement in community activities etc.

We hereby call on the custodian of spiritual activities in our rural communities and advocate for proper sensitization in the areas of spirituality and sustainable development in our communities. People should stop feeling that they are better than others because they are members of a particular spiritual sect. Our spirituality should be able to make our environment, neighborhood and the entire community progress and change for better which is what development is all about. We say NO to stunt communal growth and YES to change agents who inspire and equip our communities spiritually and otherwise.
