SPIRITUALITY AND DEVELOPMENT

Image
Over the years, I have seen people at the rural communities believe in different kind of things that beat my imagination. Some of them believe that certain medical care such as drugs and blood transfusion are meant for the nonbelievers. I have also seen people worship God through diverse mediums like snake, tree, sun and moon, chaplet, mirror, river and others.

INTRODUCING FAMILY PLANNING METHODS TO RURAL TEENAGE GIRLS

AWAKENING THE VISION OF THE RURAL PEOPLE

Image
The hunger for a plate of food can make a virgin become a prostitute over-night, a principled person become a thief and even a man of ideas to become a fool.  The  need for food has driven most people at the rural areas to the point where they have lost faith in themselves.  Parents struggle daily to provide for their children without success as they try to find the push to go on living with the resultant effect of producing more children because hunger and ignorant are like twins.

ENDING OBSTETRIC FISTULA AT THE RURAL AREAS

Image
Eleh was already a mother of three before she became 20 years. One of the few (disadvantaged) ladies that survive by being a loyalist to a notorious drug kingpin. When I asked Eleh what led her to such life style, she told me a story that left me stunned. She was given to marriage as a girl child at thirteen years to an old man who was her father's friend.

WHY WOMEN IN COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

Image
Comfort, when you have a girl as big as this and you don’t have money to send her to university get a suitor for her and after marriage let her continue the school in her husband's house. That was the opinion of my uncle to my mother when he was called to help in funding my academics.  Ironically, this represents the opinion of the majority of men in our rural areas who are

AFRICAN CULTURES AS ENEMY OF GENDER EQUALITY

Image
When I hear people ask men, organizations and   even government to  give  women a chance to get  involved in issues that concerns them,  I simply  empathize with them because that only prove their  ignorance  of the history  of   gender inequality in Africa.

TRADITIONAL BIRTH ATTENDANTS IN OUR COMMUNITIES

Image
'For children are His reward! They are His reward!!! Brethren prayers, prayers!!!' That was the sound I heard when I visited the birth center of a Traditional Birth Attendant.  Later, I heard the groaning of a woman in labour followed by a cry of a newborn baby as  the shout of 'praise the Lord' filled the air. Traditional Birth Attendants  (TBAs) are people

TRAFFICKING RURAL TEENAGE GIRLS AS DOMESTIC SERVANTS

Image
During one of my out-reach programs, I met Blessing (12 years) an orphan that lived with her elder sister (who was 14years) at 2015. I had asked all the orphans within the community to meet me there so when I asked her what her care giver does, she said “my sister does boyfriend work since she ran away from where she was

THE FARMERS' STRESS AT RURAL AREAS

Stress is the physical, mental and emotional response to a stress-causing factor or ‘stressor’. Stress can come from any situation or thought that makes you feel frustrated, angry, nervous, or anxious.  Some of the signs of stress are:

FIGHTING MALARIA AT THE RURAL AREAS

Image
In sub-Saharan Africa, we have the greatest problem of malaria as 3000 children under five years old die of malaria every single day. Although globally, around 40% of the population is at risk of malaria (http://www.who.int/features/2005/malaria/en/).

EXPLAINING CLIMATE CHANGE TO RURAL DWELLERS

Image
How do one explain to a rural dweller who lives a routine lifestyle that an increase in global temperature (also known as climate change) can affect him/her; that their daily activites and natural events can help or destroy their environment.

TABOOS IN OUR RURAL COMMUNITIES

Image
Nigeria has a lot of cultural and traditional beliefs and taboos. Some are practiced while others are not because of civilization. •For example in the Ibibio tribe using the left hand actively is a form of insult  such as using the left hand to give or accept something,  doing house chores and even using the left hand to eat.

TRIBUTE TO A LIVING LEGEND:PASTOR EMAH EKPO

Image
This should have come during your birthday but permit me to celebrate you on this good Friday evening. Meeting you on that fateful day28th October2004 was controversial, accepting and having implicit faith in me was more controversial then my unofficial adoption into daughterhood by you was the greatest controversy that still left many quarters confused till date.

SHE'S SIMPLY SPECIAL

Image
I met someone special and specialty is not enough to describe her. She is an orphan of17 years, was abandoned at a healing home (a church that accommodates people possessed of evil spirits and keeps them until they feel that the devil is finally cast out through prayers). When I interacted with her, she admitted that she was always falling and fainting until her relatives finally abandoned her in the healing home. She confided in me that a kind nurse who observed her secretly started treating her of epilepsy and now she's better. The big problem is where would she live as home and how can she learn a trade or skill because the sickness lasted for about six years. When I discussed with members of her immediate environment, they were still sure that the evil spirit has only left her for a small time and will still come back.   She said she would want to be a professional fashion designer. My heart still cries for her. Wondering why life is like this for some people yet others have ...
